Donald Eugene Whitehead, 83, of Equality, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015, 9 p.m., at the Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg. Don was born on August 11, 1931 in Tunnel Hill, the son of Ben Franklin and Myrtle (Flora) Whitehead. He married Betty Juanita Smithheart on July 4, 1957 and she preceded him in death on March 20, 1994. Don proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He faithfully supported the Equality McLain-Glover American Legion Post 595 with his time and work. Not only was he a life member of the American Legion but also the VFW, AMVETS, and DAV. Don was a correctional officer for twenty-six years and was also an assistant warden. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters, Helen Borneman, Alice Thomas, and Virginia Wright. Visitation for Don will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 10 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality. Burial will be at Webb Cemetery near Tunnel Hill with Military Rites by the Equality and Eldorado Legions with the U.S. Military Honors Team.
