John “Rodney” Howard, 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Junction on Thursday, December 12, 2024, after a long illness. Rodney was born to Conrad Leroy “Con” and Loretta Helen (Hodack) Howard on October 2, 1953, in Eldorado. He graduated from Shawneetown High School in 1971 and married Maria Davis on August 23, 1975. His lifelong passion was owning and operating his excavation business, Howard Backhoe Service, where he took immense pride in his work. His methodical and careful approach to his work made him an expert in the field. He was kind-hearted, loved his family, and was well-respected in the community. Rodney also had a deep love for animals and found joy in spending time outdoors, especially while fishing. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Howard and his cherished daughter, Jennifer (Seth) Wood. He is also survived by sister-in-law: Carol Howard, brothers-in-law: Todd Kietzman and Jim Ozee, nieces and nephews: Kim and Josh Howard, Heather and Mat Ozee, Chad and Justin Kietzman, several great-nephews and nieces, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Greg and Bob Howard, and sister Patsy Kietzman. Rodney will be remembered for his hard work, love of nature, and the profound impact he had on his family and community. Rodney’s wish was to be cremated. Visitation for Rodney will be held on Tuesday, December 17th at 3 p.m. until the Memorial service time at 5 p.m. at Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. Pastor Scott Luckett will be officiating. In lieu of flowers donations in Rodney’s memory may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
