John Anthony Wargel, 83, of Ridgway, Ill., passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Ind. He was born on November 11, 1934 near Equality, the son of the late Valentine William and Rachael Ann (Yates) Wargel. He married the former Judith Ann Foster on February 2, 1957 at the St. Joseph Church in Equality. John retired from the Peabody Coal Mine as a face boss. He was a member of the St. Kateri Catholic Church and the Ridgway Knights of Columbus Council #1581 with a third degree. John proudly served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. As a veteran he belonged to the Ridgway American Legion Post #596 and served in the honorary funeral detail. He is survived by his loving wife Judy Wargel of Ridgway; two daughters, Cindy and Donald Gross of Equality, Cherie Watson of Eldorado; two sons, Jeff Wargel of Equality, Tim and Naomi Wargel of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Barbara and Bob Naas of Norris City, Patsy and Gene Caswell of Evansville, Ind.; two brothers, Val and Anita Wargel of Ridgway, Jim Wargel of Ridgway; nineteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; his two sons, Mark E. Wargel and John A. ”Bubby” Wargel Jr.; two sisters, Doris J. Ande and Nathalie Wargel; and his brother, Ronald E. Wargel. Visitation for John will be held on Wednesday, April 11th from 10 a.m. until Funeral Mass time of 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Equality. Father Steven Beatty will be conducting the service. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery near Equality with military honors by Ridgway American Legion and the US Army Honors Detail. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the St. Joseph Cemetery - Equality. Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality will be in charge of arrangements.
