Leo Arthur Hazel, 89, of Owensboro, Ky., formerly of Omaha, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at his home. Leo was born October 30, 1920 in Wayne County to Robert Lee and Molly Pearl (Hawkman) Hazel. He was preceded in death by sisters, Faye Elmer, Anna Allen, Dorthy McKittrick and brothers, Roy, Ray, Joe, and Joy Hazel. He was married June 12, 1942 in Perry Co. Missouri, to Hazel Marie Welker. Leo is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years Hazel Marie Hazel and son, Arhur Hazel of Owensboro, Ky. He was a veteran of World War II and a sixty year member of Masonic Lodge. He retired from Ashland Oil after thirty-nine years of service. He served as Mayor of Omaha. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ownensboro, a lifetime member of U.S. Coast Guard and VFW of Carmi, Omaha Masonic Lodge #723, and Rizpah Scottish Rite and Elhasa Shriner Temple of Ashland Ky. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Omaha. Masonic rites by May Lodge #718 of Norris City. Rev. Jonathan Carroll will be officiating with burial at Palestine Two Cemetery near Omaha. Military rites by Ridgway American Legion Post #596. The family requests expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Owensboro or the First Presbyterian Church of Owensboro. Internet condolences may be made at www.vickeryfuneralchapel.com.
