Mitchell Kanady, 93, of Shawneetown, passed away at 1:32 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg, IL. Mitchell was born on Aug 19th, 1913, to Moses and Jennie (Mitchell) Kanady. He married Thelma Louise Miner on April 23rd 1940. Thelma preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Vivian Spence of Vermont and a brother Moses Kanady Jr. of California. He has one surviving sister, Virginia Stewart who lives in Vermont. Mitchell ran Kanady's Standard Service Station at the Crossroads with his Father and Mother for over 45 years. He also was a part owner of the Hub Tavern in Ridgway at one time and assisted in the operation of the tavern for several years. He was a veteran and served in the Signal Corps in Europe during World War II landing at Marseille in France and pushing forward to Germany until the war ended. He fought in Germany at the end of the Battle of the Bulge. During the Depression he had a job with the CCC, fighting forest fires, building roads and helping to install telephone lines in Washington, Oregon, and California. He had a small but close knit family whom he loved dearly. His three children are Mary Jo Kanady of Glenview Il, James (wife Mary) Kanady of Dayton OH, Jack (wife Ronda) Kanady of Springfield, IL, five grandchildren, Shawn Kanady (wife Susan) of Junction IL, Michael Kanady of Greenville SC, Jennifer Kanady of Lombard IL, Karilyn Kanady of Columbus OH, Ruth Kanady of Oxnard CA, and two great grandchildren, Carlissa Easton of Campbellsbury IN and Calen Kanady of Junction IL. Visitation will be Monday, July 23, 2007 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown with funeral services Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Louis Devous will be officiating.
