Retha June (Colvin) Newlin

Retha June Newlin, 91, of rural Elizabethtown, IL passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at her home.  She was born on June 26, 1929 in Slick, OK the daughter of the late, Roy Colvin and the late Theresa (Johnston) Colvin of Bowlegs, OK.  Retha married Victor Maurice Newlin on October 6, 1946 in Sedan, Kansas.  Retha enjoyed foremost being a wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great grandma. She enjoyed being the wife of a farmer, coalminer, co-owner and cooperator of Newlin’s Grocery and Gas Station near Sparks Hill, and excavator. She had a passion for gardening, flowers and her hummingbirds.  Retha was a Christian who called God the Father “Daddy”. Her cheerful voice and smile brought happiness to all who knew or met her.  She is survived by four children, Marilyn K. and James Pum of Burlington, WI, Charles R. Newlin of Freeburg, IL, Susan E. Newlin of Elizabethtown, IL, and Carol M. McCarty of Ridgway, IL; two daughters-in-law, Janet Newlin of Spring Valley, IL and Louise Newlin of Harrisburg, IL; eighteen grandchildren: Daniel Pum, Aaron Pum, Victoria (Pum) Cybela, Amy Newlin, Bonnie Newlin Lair, Clifford Newlin, William (Mac) Newlin, Shawn Newlin, Jennifer (Newlin) Eveland, Rebecca Newlin, Christine Newlin, Jessica (Newlin) Teague, Teena Newlin, Michelle Newlin-Duncan, Douglas Rider, Brian Rider, Marla Rider, Samantha McCarty Bolds; twenty-five great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a brother Armand Colvin of OK and a sister Odessa Tipps of TX, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Wilson of Westmont, IL; and several nieces and nephews. Retha was preceded in death her beloved husband of 71 years Victor Maurice (Vic), her parents Roy and Theresa Colvin; three sons, Thomas E., Leonard R., Robert J. “Nature Boy”; three daughters-in-law Lynn Newlin (Tom), Irene Newlin (Tom), and Linda Newlin (Charles); a sister Selma Conner of Tulsa, OK and Lee Gwenn of TX; one granddaughter, Marla Rider.  Visitation for Retha will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality.  Graveside funeral services and burial will follow the visitation time at 3:30 p.m. and will be at the Lane-Winters Cemetery near Cave-in-Rock.
