Ruth J. Black, 74, of Cedar Run, N.J.; passed away suddenly on Monday, January 18, 2010, 3:44 a.m., at the Southern Ocean County Hospital in Stafford Twp., N.J. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on June 7, 1935 to James and Anna Badman. Ruth married John Robert "Bob" Black on January 26, 1957, who preceded in her in death on December 31, 2008. Ruth was dedicated in the service of her family and community. She was very active with her church, garden club and family activities. She was the Clerk of Session and an Elder and Chair of the Communications Committee with the First Presbyterian Church of Tuckerton. She was formerly a Deacon of the church and was instrumental in starting the Sunshine Society. Ruth was also involved in the Presbyterian Women Group and the Krafty Krafters Group. After moving to New Jersey from Indiana in 1999, Ruth became a member of the Garden Club of Long Beach Island. She served as President in 2001-2002, and was an honorary member and life member. Ruth had been the assistant Treasurer of the Club and editor of the Club's monthly newsletter. She also served on the New Jersey State Garden Club Board in many capacities including Life Membership Chairperson. Most recently, Ruth was asked to serve on the Green Crusade Committee to write the last twenty-five years of GCNJ history. Her long years as a devoted and dedicated member of GCNJ made her an invaluable asset to the garden club. Ruth loved spending time with her children; daughter, Linda and Carl Weber of Lambertville, N.J., Dennis Lee Black of Allenwood, N.J.; and grandchildren, Connor, Aaron, and Daniel, who called her "Mimi". In addition to family, church, and the garden club, Ruth enjoyed the outdoors. She and her late husband, Bob Black, canoed around the island of Manhattan, and spent weeks at a time on their boat, sailing around the Florida Keys. Ruth loved animals and was particularly devoted to her Yorkshire Terrier, "Half-Pint". In her short life on this earth, Ruth had made countless number of close friends and acquaintances all across the country, all of whom will miss her warm smile, infectious laugh, and endless energy. Visitation for Ruth will be held from 10 - 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown with graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery near Equality at 11 a.m. Reverend Jerry Williams will be officiating the service.
