Vernon Gale Melton, 74, of New Haven, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013, 12:20 a.m. at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born on February 15, 1939 in rural Reynolds County in Missouri, the son of Howard and Ada Jean (Harmon) Melton. Vernon worked at the Continental Grain at Mt. Vernon, Ind. He married Brenda L. Cathey on August 13, 1974. Vernon is survived by his wife Brenda Melton of New Haven; one son, Gene and Julie Melton of Carmi; five daughters, Delonda and John Reed of Terra Haute, Ind., Lesa Melton and Tony Outlaw of Evansville, Ind., Tanya and Johnnie Clifford II of New Haven, April Abbott of Carmi, Loretta Melton of Henderson, Ky.; three brothers, Clinton and Nickie Melton of St. Louis, Mo.; Joey and Margaret Melton of Kankakee, Joe Melton of Carmi; two sisters, Mary and Tim Scott of Evansville, Ind., Brenda and Waite Rowe of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Stanley Melton; and one sister, Kathy Freimiller. There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven with Pastor Mike Fields officiating.
